Osbaldo Orozco Memorial Scholarship

Army 1st Lt. Osbaldo Orozco continues to serve veterans and Cal Poly.

The former Mustang football player, who became a force on and off the field, decided that serving his country was more important than football. In 2003, he gave his life in defense of our nation.

The Osbaldo Orozco Memorial Scholarship was established to support veterans at Cal Poly while honoring the legacy of a proud American and Cal Poly alumnus whose story continues to inspire. The scholarship, open to vets in all majors throughout the university’s six colleges, is awarded based on financial need.

We need your support to assure this scholarship continues. Our goal is to raise $25,000 to create a permanent endowment that will provide a $1,000 scholarship to support student veterans every year forever.

Orozco was born March 19, 1977, the second of five sons. Raised in Earlimart, Calif., he shined on the Delano High School gridiron. A full football scholarship brought him to Cal Poly in 1995. Easygoing off the field, but relentless on, the 6‐foot‐1, 250‐pound linebacker was named as a sophomore to the NCAA Division 1‐AA Independent’s first team. No. 45 racked up 300 total tackles including 136 unassisted five sacks and three interceptions by the end of his Cal Poly career in 1999.

Orozco joined Cal Poly’s ROTC as a student, and fell in love with the rigors and discipline of military life. When he graduated with a degree in social sciences on June 16, 2001, he was also commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Army. Orozco trained at Fort Benning, Ga., and joined the storied 1st Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment, where he was an infantry platoon leader.

In 2003, Orozco, assigned to the regiment’s C Company, deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. On April 25, just five weeks into the conflict, he was killed in battle. He was killed when his Bradley fighting vehicle overturned en route to help others under attack near Tikrit, Iraq, according to the Pentagon. Orozco was 26.

Please help ensure that Army 1st Lt. Osbaldo Orozco’s memory and sacrifice will never be forgotten. Thank you for your support!
